Hi Brendan,

Definitely will let you know how things work out. After just one week of promoting it, we already have our first submission, which is pretty cool. There's still about 2 months left, so by this rate, we hope to get a lot of people involved and a lot of exposure as a result.

We're also coming out with another app soon, so maybe some cross promotion between apps would help us too.

Excellent post - I've been selling apps on the app store since last July and standing out has become more and more challenging.

I generally agree with your points, except I do need to point out that since Apple controls the entire app store experience one thing turns out to be the most important thing. That is placement in the lists for each category (top 100, new release, new and notable).

Every bit of promotion I have attempted has been overshadowed by the placements my apps happen to have on these lists. And the only one developers have any control over is the release date list.

That is, the best way to drive sales is to constantly improve the app and get an update published at least once a month. Better to push updates out every week or two if possible.

This is because every time a developer publishes an update the app goes back to the top of the release date list. At any rate, something to keep in mind.

I just started a company with my buddy and we just launched our first app last week. It's difficult trying to get noticed in that giant pool of iPhone apps.

We're also holding a contest to help promote the app and our brand as well. Hopefully this will help surface our app too.

when you bid on Google, you can have broad match keywords (e.g. if you bid on shoes you can have your ad shoe on red shoes, tennis shoes & butterfly shoes).
if you're only selling kids shoes you may want to add some negative keywords (like adult, big, teenage) to your ad to ensure that you don't bid on irrelevant terms and waste your ad money
